Victoria Colmegna (1986, AR) explores the dynamics that characterize closed social systems. Her art practice focuses on observing the amateur artist’s creating the artwork to the point where it becomes a form of self-harm or self-abuse. Victoria Colmegna’s works are often characterized by an excessive attention to detail, and a folk vein that makes them somehow apocryphal and transpersonal, as if these were the result of collective rather than individual action. By mixing, engaging, hosting and inviting, Colmegna seeks, through art, to address the unresolved dilemma of self-esteem. Her work lies in a boundary zone where fashion, fan-item and memorabilia intertwine, creating a frenzied boundary-jumping between inhomogeneous industries and cultures. This approach allows her to explore new forms of expression, questioning the now traditional conventions of contemporary art.

The presentation comprises a group of collectible sweaters based on Picabia’s catalogue raisonné. The work frantically border-hops between industries; fashion design, family memorabilia, and art commodities. Increasingly intertwined with the field of luxury goods production, fashion and art conflate in an industry model increasingly operating by season. Colmegna’s hand knit sweaters were first meant to be worn by collector’s kids, turning them into both a mode of display and a way to incite consumer contagion. The ongoing series, that so far comprises around 60 sweaters, aims to complete all artworks in Picabia’s catalogue, hinting at more traditional ideas around collecting, such as competition around acquiring objects, and the emotional attachment to a long pursuit that can never be fully completed.
